G'day I'm Laura Burzacott also known as Burzie. I am an actor, singer and theatre maker, committed to telling new Australian stories and creating entertaining cabaret and music theatre. I am one of the driving forces behind cabaret a cappella group Ginger and Tonic, touring Australia in the award winning 'Desperate and Dateless' and 'For Love or Money.' As a founding member of the Present Tense Ensemble, I have performed in 'Chants Des Catacombes' (Melbourne/ Adelaide/ Castlemaine seasons), ‘Margaret Fulton Queen of the Dessert’ (Theatre Works) and ‘Ricercar’ (Theatre Works). Other credits include ‘Blue Angel’ (big hART and Tasmanian International Arts Festival), the national tour of 'Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls' and 'Standing on Ceremony: the Gay Marriage Plays' (Ellis Productions).
I am a doughnut and sparkling enthusiast, with a pretty big obsession with my Jack Russell Poppy.
Specialising in original songs as well as impertinent parodies, a cappella girl group Ginger and Tonic rely solely on their voices to create their unique sound. I was lucky enough to join the group in 2014 and love singing with my gal pals Jane, Bec and Steph. We have our audiences in stitches with our wicked humour, transfixing them with their superb harmonies and palpable chemistry.
Together we have performed at festivals around Australia including Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Perth's FringeWorld, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Cabaret Festival and Bright Cabaret Festival. Our cabaret show Desperate and Dateless received a Green Room Award for Best Musical Direction in 2015. Our 2017 cabaret show, For Love or Money, received five-star reviews and was toured around the country. We also debuted two brand new shows to sell-out houses at the beginning of 2018; Gays of Our Lives, and Australian Treasures & Guilty Pleasures.
I also feature in the albums Ginger and Tonic LIVE (2015) and Come and Get It (2018).
My creative practice is storytelling through a fusion of song, sound, movement and comedy. Over the last 11 years, I have been involved in creating original, self-devised works, exploring and bringing to life complex and exciting themes. Most recently I directed and facilitated the third year students from Federation University in Neon District.
This 2021 work, that could be described as a warped cabaret, was a direct response to the pandemic experienced throughout 2020, with references to the De Cameron (1353). As Director of this piece, I encouraged ensemble members to bring in individual and group offerings in the form of music, text, song and movement and, over a five week period, we workshopped, edited and distilled ideas to make a work that represented how COVID had affected them. The work was created by drawing upon viewpoints, pulse work, improvisation, provocations, movement work, singing and vocal workshops.
A big part of my career has centered around working on new and original works. I have had the pleasure of workshopping and bringing brand new shows to life, these shows include Margaret Fulton, Queen of the Desert (Theatre Works), Call Girl the Musical (Chapel off Chapel), Lottie the Musical (Magnormas), Jack of Two Trades (Monash University), Errol and Fidel (Present Tense), Ricercar (Theatre Works) and Blue Angel (Big hART). My time at Ginger and Tonic has seen us create several cabaret works too, these include Desperate and Dateless, Match Made in Harmony, For Love or Money, Gays of Our Lives and Australian Treasures and Guilty Pleasures which have toured all over Australia.
Hailing from Ballarat, I have a big passion for bringing theatre to regional parts of Australia. In 2017 I teamed up with Jane Patterson and founded Backpack On Productions, after many years of singing, acting and producing independent theatre and cabaret. In May 2018/2019/2021, we co-produced the Bright Cabaret Festival with FAM Events and Productions. The festival took place over 3 days in May, held in the picturesque regional town of Bright in Victoria. At Backpack On Productions we are passionate about community engagement, and creating joyful and enriching experiences for audiences, as well as fulfilling opportunities for artists.
"But it’s Laura Burzacott who adds a little extra sauce, and after dinner mints, and just steals the show as Bea, Margaret’s friend who starts as a “Lady of the Night” before becoming a respectable air hostess in one of the funniest sequences of the entire show. She has a fabulous sense of comic timing". Stage Whispers
“Rhoda to Lehpamer’s Mary, Laura Burzacott displays finely honed comic chops as best friend Bea, who turns up, Forest Gump-style, in numerous aspects of Margaret’s journey through the years. Burzacott is a joy to watch, her high energy presence adding significantly to the spontaneous vibe. Watch out for her air hostess impression – what a hoot.”
Theatre People
"Their repertoire was a mix of original lyrics to familiar tunes (our favourite, Tinderella, is one that we guarantee you won’t be able to walk away from the theatre without it stuck in your head), plus parodies and some straight up covers – including an awesome Salt n’ Pepa rap from Laura “Burzy’ Burzacott – fantastic!" . We Know Melbourne
"The Present Tense ensemble, under the direction of Bryce Ives, are all strong performers in their own right. Josh Price and Laura Burzacott in particular provide the most side-splitting moments of the evening, Price as a series of grotesque caricatures of Fulton’s various lovers and industrial misogynists, and Burzacott as Bea, Fulton’s long-time friend from her bohemian days, who embodies the character with good-hearted ribaldry".
Theatre Press
"It’s a rare pleasure to see director Ives performing on stage himself, and his smooth showman charisma and Burzacott’s ever- stunning voice and understated wit formed a wonderful foil to Harvey’s irrepressible and frantic comic vivacity. Meanwhile, Jack Howard managed a little demure scene-stealing both on the trumpet and with his unexpected solo song ‘Like A Gondolier’".
